Product Development Engineer III
Location: Cary, NC

Reports to: SVP, COO Hosting & Infrastructure Services
Primary Function
The product development engineer designs, develops, and manages activities for a specific product or group of products and services from product/service definition and planning through production, release, and end of life. Serves as the central resource with design, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing as the products/services move to production and distribution. Involvement lasts throughout all stages of a product’s or services’ lifecycle including modifications, upgrades and maintenance of the product or service line.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure that technology strategies and implementation are consistent with company product/service vision, goals, and timeframes
- For assigned projects, take overall responsibility for delivering the product/service to production; including requirements generation, hardware, firmware, documentation, general release, operations and support.
- Project Management. Develop, publish and meet schedules, keep all stakeholders informed of product/service status at all times.
- Product verification. Provide verification testing of product features and performance.
- Customer certification. Establish and provide qualification of product features and capabilities with customers.
- Documentation. Provide content for manuals, installation and customer guides, help files, application notes, tech support web pages, and release notes and/or FAQ’s.
- Support. Resolve technical support escalations.
- Track industry technology developments, supplier roadmaps, standards bodies and make product recommendations.
- Develop and provide comprehensive test plan
- Work with cross-functional engineering teams and manage suppliers to ensure the products meet requirements for performance, functionality, cost, schedule, quality, and reliability
- Identify, evaluate, and resolve development/qualification issues
- Build relationships with key supplier and technology partners and evaluate new vendors, products, and technologies to determine if they are viable for Consonus product/service line(s).
- Identify and drive improvements in the development process that facilitate quality, schedule, or cost improvements
- Assist in pre-sales engagements
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 2 years office experience
- Experience with customer relations
- Experience in the IT industry helpful
Knowledge and Skills
- Teamwork! This position requires a self-starter that works well with a dedicated team and a close working relationship with an extended team, including operations, sales, customer support, marketing, professional services, and information technology.
- Experience in product developing, testing, quality assurance, or certifying technical solutions.
- Thorough understanding of test diagnostic strategies and tools, strong troubleshooting skills and knowledge of various root-cause analyses and corrective action techniques and tools.
- Intermediate to advanced experience with any of the following is extremely desirable:
- Symantec Enterprise Vault (email and file system archiving, journaling, discovery)
- Microsoft Windows, Exchange, SQL
- Clustering concepts and technologies
- Networking skills (CISSP, CCNA, IP Networking, VPNs, Security, routing, troubleshooting)
- Storage (NetApp, SUN, HP; CIFS, NFS, SAN, Fibre Channel, iSCSI)
- Virtualization (Cloud and utility based computing); VMware (installation, configuration, planning)
- Ability and willingness to take ownership of product.
- Ability to adapt to dynamic situations and overcome challenges.
- Effective organization, project management and coordination skills; ability to get the job done.
- Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
- Excellent communication skills including phone skills
- Proficient on desktop applications; Word, Excel, Windows, Power Point, etc.
- Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism
